Yes, anyone can build a website with AI now — and some of them look great. The real question is whether it wins you business, and whether building it is the best use of your time. For most business owners, it isn’t.
Can anyone really build a website with AI?
Yes. I’ll say that plainly, because it’s true and pretending otherwise would be daft. We use AI every day at Whiteski. It has made us quicker at almost everything.
I had this conversation with a friend recently — a good-natured argument over a drink. His view: anyone can build a website with AI now, so my industry is on borrowed time. My answer was that I can also paint a picture. I don’t. I pay someone who’s brilliant at it.
The funny part? He’s paying an agency to build his own website. Because he’s busy running a successful business, and his time is worth more doing that.
Anyone can build a website with AI. I can also paint a picture. I don’t.
Why do businesses pay experts for things they could do themselves?
Because “could” isn’t the same as “should”. Every business pays someone to do things it technically could do itself. Accountants, electricians, solicitors, cleaners.
- Doesn’t want to learn AI tools
- Doesn’t want to spend evenings on a website
- Wants the phone to ring
- Pays someone to make that happen
- Could hire someone in-house
- Doesn’t want the extra headcount
- Doesn’t want to do it themselves either
- Pays someone to solve the problem properly
Neither is buying “a website”. They’re paying to have a problem solved, by someone who does it better than they would.
What happened when a client rebuilt his own site with AI?
This one is real, and I’ve left out anything that would identify him.
We built and looked after his website for years. It was doing well — a lot of work had gone into the SEO. Then he discovered AI, decided he didn’t need us, and rebuilt the whole thing himself.
Honestly? It looked good. In places, arguably better than ours. I’m not going to pretend otherwise.
We weren’t. His rankings had dropped, and I think I know why. When we built his location pages, we staggered them, watched who was already ranking in each town, tweaked, and learned as we went. I’d bet his instruction to the AI was something like “optimise my site for SEO” — and it did what it was told. Nobody asked the questions it didn’t.
What does AI get wrong when you build a website yourself?
Usually nothing it was asked to do. The trouble is what it wasn’t asked. AI answers the question you type; it doesn’t know which question you should have typed. Things we see missed again and again:
- Launching dozens of town pages in one go — Google’s spam policies specifically warn against doorway pages
- Pages written for searches that bring traffic but never bring work
- Several pages quietly competing for the same search — see should every service have its own page?
- No clear place to call, message or book on a phone
- Nobody watching Search Console after launch — see impressions but no clicks
- Claims, reviews or numbers the AI simply made up
- Nobody checking what competitors are doing better
Will every AI-built website end up looking the same?
If everyone types the same prompt, probably. Ask an AI for “a modern website for a roofing company” and you get a very competent average of every roofing website it has already seen. Ask it again for the roofer down the road and you get much the same thing.
Think of posters on a wall. When they’re all made from the same template, you stop seeing any of them. Online, attention is the whole game — and a site that looks like everyone else’s doesn’t get it, however polished it is.
If everyone types the same command, everyone gets the same website.
A point of difference doesn’t come from a prompt. It comes from design principles, a vision for the business, knowing what your competitors look like so you don’t, and the flexibility to change course when the data says something isn’t working. Years of working alongside designers and UX optimisation teams teaches you that; one command can’t.
- The average of what already exists
- Looks like your competitors’ sites
- Polished, but easy to scroll past
- Stays as it was launched
- Built around what makes you different
- Designed against your competition
- Made to stop someone scrolling
- Changed when the numbers say so
How much is your time actually worth?
Five days of your time isn’t free. Take your day rate and multiply it by five. Then add the evenings spent on changes, the learning curve, and the updates you’ll need next month and the month after.
Time is time. Spend yours on the thing only you can do.
If you genuinely enjoy building websites, that time might be worth it to you — and that’s fine. If you’d rather be on a job, with a customer, or at home, it probably isn’t.
Is a web designer who uses AI better than AI on its own?
Yes — and it’s not close. A business owner learning as he goes to build one website is a different thing from someone who lives in this every day. AI makes both of us faster. It doesn’t give either of us judgement. The difference is knowing when to push back on what it produces, and where to push further than it would go on its own.
So should you build your own website with AI?
Honestly, it depends what you want from it.
- You enjoy it and have the time
- You don’t want to spend any money
- A nice-looking site is enough
- You’re happy learning SEO as you go
- Your time is better spent on your business
- You need it to rank and bring enquiries
- You want to beat your competition, not match them
- You want someone to ask when something breaks
If you do go it alone, go slowly: add pages a few at a time, give each one a real reason to exist, and check Search Console every week. That alone would have saved the client above a very uncomfortable three months.
How do we use AI to build websites?
Every day. We’re a small team with specialists in design, development and UX, and AI is part of how all of us work — to learn quicker, test ideas faster and build quicker. Then the people who know what good looks like take it from there: pushing back where it’s weak, and pushing further where it stopped short.
Because we build websites every day, we see what works across dozens of businesses — what ranks, what converts, what people scroll straight past — and every build feeds the next one. One person building one site can’t see that.
We build with AI. We don’t hand the thinking to it.
And because AI speeds up the build rather than dictating it, the finished site can live wherever suits your business:
So yes, anyone can build a website with AI. We just intend to build yours better — designed to sell, with SEO that goes past the basics — and to be there to explain why.
